To help students build data portfolios and navigate the labor market
Data Clinic
Through the Data Clinic, students work on real-world data projects for real clients (firms and organizations in local areas and beyond) under the supervision of a faculty member. Students gain practical experiences in working with data and build their data portfolio, preparing them to excel in the labor market.
Spring 2024 – Determinants of student outcomes
Two students, under the supervision of Professor Laura Grube, study the determinants of students’ academic performance and other outcomes for local K-12 schools, to help formulate school policies and guide donor’s investment strategies that will improve these outcomes.
Spring 2024 – Market Research on data science, finance, sports management, sustainability careers
Eight students, under the supervision of Professor Diep Phan, conduct four market research projects for four career fields: sports management, sustainability, finance, and data science.
Summer and Fall 2023 – Market Research on Marketing careers
Two students, under the supervision of Professor Diep Phan, conducted market research on marketing careers. The students scraped data on major job websites for entry-level marketing jobs, created a database to store such data, then analyzed them to gain insights on geographical distribution of job, skills needed, and salary information. They communicated the research results by writing a report (with data visualization) and presented the result at Beloit and Beyond Conference in November 2023.
Spring 2023 – Community Survey and Result Analysis
A group of six students, under the supervision of Professor Disha Shende, helped Community Action, a local non-profit organization that works to create pathways out of poverty for residents in Rock and Walworth County, conduct an Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE) survey and analyzed results.

- Empirical research projects with faculty from various departments
Professional Networking and Career Advising
Data science students at Beloit have access to a large and tight-knit network of alumni and industry professionals in data careers, who are ready to support and mentor students.
The experienced faculty also provide personalized career advising and heavily helps with networking.
The DSDA program has an annual professional networking event at the Career Accelerator every January.
